Some updates on JomSocial plugins and API

We have started significant amount of work on JomSocial plugins. Our top priority, is of course to get the API right, just right. When developing API, our philosophy is simple. Yes, 'simple' . For the initial release, our API will be very lean, yet usable. Although, we could potentially load up JomSocial with tons and tons of system "hooks", I will only open a few key ones, and will use feedbacks from 3rd party developer to determine which other events that they need to use.

Of course, having our code super clean, with an extremely clean MVC implementation means developer can directly request various objects and data easily.

Beta testing progress, 400 testers and counting

A few days ago, we open our early development site to some of our customers to get some early feedback. We let them take it for a quick spin, gather some early feedback and ask them what they need from JomSocial.

Within hours, hundreds of beta request pouring in and withing a few days, we have over 400 user punching our test site daily!. The response was amazing. Feedback has been extremely encouraging.

On the menu

I would like to write a short note on our component menu items. Very early on, we have decided that we should take advantage of Joomla! menu system. Although the component itself has its own menu system, it is actually completely optional.

By implementing multiple view, you can actually create a normal menu link to any part of the system within Joomla easily. What this means is, you could disable JomSocial built-in menu system, and create your own new menu and menu module.

I hope the screenshots below explain it better.

User integration

1. No additional login module required. One of our earlier aim is to remove any needs for separate login modules. Joomla built-in login module should be good enough. I understand a lot of template club already have a custom coded login module and it would be a waste not to be able to use those.

2. No required profile field. All profile field are optional and fully customizable. We do not want to force you to have any additional field if you don't want to. If you do specify it however, the registration page will present these fields as you would expect.

3. Doesn't need any database sync. None whatsoever. We want all user to integrate seamlessly with the rest of your site.

Welcome to JomSocial . I know you guys have a lot of questions on JomSocial and I will try my best to answer them as we go along. I am not trying to create childish, unnecessary hype here, but I do believe our visitors deserve some updates before we roll out the product.

Firstly, what is the status of JomSocial ?. Well, it is undergoing heavy development and currently being tested by selected partners and users. Most of the core feature have already been implemented and some interface designed has been finalized. I can't really commit on any date, but we are aiming for a public beta within a few weeks time.

If you maintain a large community, we would love to hear from you. We strongly believe in real user input in shaping our components. Just email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we can give you access to our early prototype .
