How did they do it?
I just wanted to share with you some of our ideas that didn't make it to the final build. We have tons of ideas and out talented designer occasionally come up with some ideas just for fun. Many of these work never get out of our hard-disk, but I think, what the heck, lets just show them to everyone.
Malaysian office is getting ready to celebrate yet another New Year...just on a different calendar! We will be celebrating Chinese New Year in a few days. It's one of the biggest holidays in Malaysia, and in observance of this Holiday, most of our staff will be taking a few days off.
Our support access will be limited from Friday, February 12 to February 22. Our US office will still be open and the team there will be responding to your sales & billings tickets, but if you are planning to do a major modification and/or installation, we suggest that you hold off until our entire tech support team are all back from the holiday break. We don't want to leave you hanging there all alone!

As many of you would already know, Joomla has a long and deep history with Australia in particular, going all the way back to the Mambo days. In fact, some of Joomla core developers and co-founders are from Australia. JomSocial 1.6 codename Brillo is finally here!. We've worked long and hard on this release, adding new features and refining the product to make a faster, streamlined... just plain better JomSocial. And we think you will agree, this version rocks!
So what's new about JomSocial 1.6, erm, Brillo? Well, for starters, we have resolved over 170 minor issues that were logged in our internal issue tracking system. You can view the complete change log here, but let me briefly highlight some of JomSocial Brillo's exciting new features:
I want to talk about 1 particular trigger point that we added to JomSocial 1.6, that is so simple, yet massively powerful.
We are talking about "onBeforeControllerCreate" trigger point. This trigger allows any plugins to override the controller object creation with any other object type. To put it simply, plugins now have the ability to redraw or control access to any JomSocial page easily, without hacking any of our core files.
Let me perhaps paint a picture of what is possible.
This could go on and on... With 1.6, we can expect some pretty powerful plugin created to take advantage of this new API.
For website developers, you can now create a reusable plugin that you can simply install for your various clients. This will allow you to offer a customized JomSocial experience for your client while still allowing you to upgrade to any new version of JomSocial easily with minimal work.
In case you haven't heard about it, let me announce it properly. JomSocial 1.6 will have a powerful, seamless support for Amazon S3 storage. For now, the support includes both videos and photos, where you can serve the files directly from Amazon's servers, bypassing your servers, thus reducing site load and bandwidth consumption.
When we started thinking about support for remote storage, there are a couple of ideas that we considered. For the technically inclined, providing a virtualized file system, where local file and remote file looks exactly the same, seems like a good idea. However, to ignore latency issues would be a huge mistake. Access to local files are FAST and accessing remote file is orders or magnitude slower. That is a fact.
So, we decided that we needed to provide the external storage support that is easy to use, work seamlessly, while maintaining fast operation for all file-system related operation. Our design also uses pluggable storage system, meaning that, it is rather easy to add new storage type (your own remote server, ftp server support are planned!)
How does it work?
Once you set photos to use a different storage type, cron process will work in the background to transfer all your photos to the other storage. This means that, when you actually change the storage type at the backend, there is no need to transfer the whole content (which could be in tens of GB for large site).
Cron processes will automatically do this transfer for you, in an orderly, gradual fashion. This allow your site to run smoothly while data are being transferred to the remote storage. Unused files in your local server will then be deleted automatically.
This also work flawlessly in reverse. Say you have tons of data in remote storage and now wanted to move it all to local server, or any other storage type, you'll only need to flip a switch in the site backend and transfer will start in the background.
Can you simplify this further please...
Really, what it all means is that our remote storage support works fast, seamless and headache free! Oh yes, any 3rd party plugin will also be able to use this services!

JomSocial is officially a 1 year old project. 1 year is an awfully young age for a software and we are proud to be where we are today. It might not have been perfect (and I will personally, without any second thought, admit that..) but I believe we have made it through and offer a product that are of great value to our users.
Developing a general purpose component that serve a HUGE number of different needs is not as easy as it might look. Different people has different requirements and to satisfy every single one of our user is a mammoth task.
I would like to take a moment here to discuss some of the development challenges of JomSocial... and share the triumphs.
