Default Privacy / Share Settings for Wall Posts & Profile Fields

ISSUE SUMMARY:

I just want to give a bit of background, but my main question is below. We have a mixed community where we want profiles fields and activity posts to be ‘restricted’ or not made public if you are a student, but public if you are faculty / staff. It looks like much of this could be accomplished through some html hacks (perhaps an html template override for the profile template page that doesn’t render any fields from a student profile type even if they set it to public), and by not displaying wall posts on the homepage even if they are set to public (using backend settings: site->layout->Show Activity Stream = Members Only which I do already). The challenge is that I would like to ensure that people are actually paying attention to the settings in the future, as we are trying to open the community up more.

So I guess my questions are:
1) Can I override the activity / wall posting utility anywhere with html overrides or what I need to do core hacks (SEE SCREENSHOT)? I would like to have post privacy default to “site members only” as opposed to defaulting to public. This way if we ever do open up the wall view to the public, posts will be hidden unless someone explicitly chose to display them publically.

2) When I create a new profile, can the privacy settings for each profile field be set to “members only” by default instead of public? As mentioned, I can go in and change them with mysql for existing fields, and create a template override that perhaps doesn’t even allow the profile to render, but would prefer to have another layer of protection in there in case info does leak, it means they had to actually select “public” instead of it defaulting to that.

Thanks!
