ISSUE SUMMARY:
I have customize my theme for socialize template by modifying the css code (the files inside the t3-assets/dev/my_theme folder). The problem is that every so often the changes disappear and I need to back up the css files. How can I stop this from happening?

Everytime you change something using Theme Magic or upgrade - this will overwrite your changes.
That's why you should use ROOT.templates/socialize/css/custom.css file to store your css overrides.
- Instead of saying: 'it's not working', explain the problem in detail.
- Screenshots with the URL visible in them and the problem marked are more than welcome.
- Tell us how to replicate the problem, we can't fix it if we can't find it.
- Make sure that your site/server meets JomSocial System Requirements
- Make sure to setup JomSocial Cron Job
- Always provide us with access details to the backend and ftp. We need it to debug problems.
