Forum golden rule: ONE thread = ONE issue.
You merge too many issues in one thread so it make it harder to follow for us and other users.
So we'll work only one issue at a time - others will be ignored till you open new thread for them.
1. I already provided you css solution for your display issue... it seems that you failed to implement them correctly.
2. Disable js script merging/compression as it damages them. After you disable this option in template menu and tabs will work again.

And how do you edit template files?
Just a) editing them where they are or b) creating override?
If a) then yes, your changes will be lost as you edit core files, they are overwritten during upgrade if b) they should be safe.
The ONLY proper way to modify template of ANY Joomla! extension is to create override - that is coping files to:
ROOT/templates/your-template/html/com_community/layouts/folder-name
