However: the Megamenu drop down on iPad still does not work in the last version of the Socialize template (1.2.2).

Yes, I noticed also on socialize.jomsocial.com that the pulldown menu does behave erratic on iPad.
This is what I see (same happens on my site):
- open site on iPad, click "Jomsocial" or "Explore" or "Preset Styles" or "Typography": no pulldown appears (bug).
- click "Joomla": pulldown menu appears (note: this one has a different type of menu style!)
- click "FAQ": FAQ page appears correctly (there is no pulldown)
- and now something strange happens: AFTER having clicked FAQ: the left menu entries now DO SHOW their pulldown menu entries.
Hope this helps you in finding the bug.
