I would like to ad a heading that reads "Share something today" at the top of the stream on the main page. Above the
"Say what's on your mind box" like attached screen grab from existing site.

The screen shot is from the existing site www.troton.com it is not based on Jomsocial. You would need to join to see the page in the previous screen shot.

I have attached a mock-up of how I would like the new site, built with Jomsocial, to look. www.troton-dev.co.uk
I would like to know how to achieve this.

please make override for:
/components/com_community/templates/jomsocial/layouts/frontpage/base.php
copy it to
/templates/[your site template]/html/com_community/layouts/frontpage/base.php

edit it and put this new code at line 49
