User cannot make changes to profile, upload photos, etc.

ISSUE SUMMARY: in our test version of our new website using the latest JomSocial version, it is firstly not possible for a user to register (opened another thread for that). So a normal joomla user was created, who could then log in to the community, BUT it is not possible to make any changes to the profile, upload photos, change the cover, or use any menus.

What could the problem be? and how do we fix it?
