I want to offer a free account that only has access to events. Meaning that they can read, respond if they are going or not, and also invite a friend. All others with a paid account will have access to everything.

Is this possible?

This is possible by using 3rd party pay component system, you can try to use PayPlan membership or Jomsocial Profile Type JSPT.

I am using Membership Pro right now. I talked with them and they asked the following question. Please let me know if it is possible.

"Let me ask you one question: In Jomsocial, is there a way to only allow users from certain Joomla groups to access to Events section (or any other things)? If they support something like that, then it is possible

Basically, we can config Membership Pro so that when users sign up for a subscription plan, they will be assigned to the Joomla groups you want. After that, you can config Jomsocial (if they support that option) so that only users from the group above can access to Events section and it should solve the issue"

Currently jomsocial doesnt support with ACL (joomla group) configuration, but you use the menu ACL configuration, which you can create the new menu event as example, and you set the ACL from that menu... I think it will be a solution.

anyway, have you tried Jomsocial Profile Type? the configuration for Jomsocial is more complex there based on profile type.
