Is there a way to restrict certain users (or user groups or profiles) from sending/receiving messages from other users?
[Example: if I want to create a site that has option for "free" members (no messaging with other users) and paid subscription users (able to message other subscribed users)]

I'm sorry but this is not possible out-of-the-box. But you may combine PayPlans with JSPT:

To be sure if this is possible, please, contact with JSPT developers.

- Tell us how to replicate the problem, we can't fix it if we can't find it.
- Make sure that your site/server meets JomSocial System Requirements
- Make sure to setup JomSocial Cron Job
- Always provide us with access details to the backend and ftp. We need it to debug problems.
- If you have a similar problem, but a solution you found isn't working, open a new thread instead of 'merging' with an existing one.

I am surprised you don't have this as a standard feature...
Wouldn't it be the main purpose of "Multiple Profiles" feature to be able to assign detailed permissions and privileges to the various profiles that are being created? Otherwise what's the purpose of "Multiple Profiles"?

The purpose of multiprofiles is to display different profile fields for each profile type.
We'll implement ACL for profiles in JomSocial 4.3.
