ISSUE SUMMARY:
When a user shares a status update, the status is limited to approx. 140 character when shown in the general activity stream. A "read more" is making it possible to click and read the entire status update.

What controls this limit ?
I would like to extend the shown status to at least 300-400 characters

You can configure it from Jomsocial configuration->Layout->Activity Content Length (to show read more button) and Jomsocial configuration->Site->Character Limit (for sharestatus chars limitation)

Damn :-) I am simply not able to see the forest for the trees. I have probably been over all the different pages in Configuration a million times and I have been totally unable to see this.
