ISSUE SUMMARY: Is there a way to have status updates from 1 user - for instance the site admin - displayed on the frontpage even for non-members (public)? Status updates from other users should however be visible only to friends.

it cant do that. if for public that status will visible to all (site members and guests).
can you elaborate more what goal you need to achieve by doing this?

Hi,
We want to display items of news for instance, or when we add an additional language, have it displayed in the stream. Is there an alternative way to do this? place a module or such in that position?

by default jomsocial not able to do that. you need to build your own plugin for that purpose.
