You are using override language so thats why the string broken, I already removed the override and works fine now.

While that solved it, I do need the custom language -- is there a way of just fixing the issues without wiping the entire override which has many customizations and would have expected would seamlessly carry forward when upgrading...

You can re-override the language file, but please you use the latest language file from jomsocial 4.1.1

We have lot of changes on version 4.1.1..do you remember you customazation? I suggest you re apply it from Joomla backend->extenstion->language->overrides.. with this method you override will be safe, you wont get any problem in the future then

yes, that is different, via FTP you overrided all language strings, via Joomla translation override you can override some strings, not all..
