ISSUE SUMMARY:
If I have notifications and new messages the red numbers indicate this. If I click on the number I see a pop up with a list of the notifications. But the number will only disappear if I either click on the link, or click on 'View All' to go to the Notifications page. If I don't click on a link or go to View All then the red number does not disappear.

This is different to Facebook, where the red number disapppears as soon as I bring up the pop up ie I don't have to click on any item to make the notification number go away.

Sometimes the user does not want to click on the link, or to go to View All, (for instance, they may have seen the item in their stream already). They would like the red number to be reset to zero now they have seen the pop up. If it isn't, pretty soon they will have a large notification number, which they ignore.
