Strange User Registration Problems

JomSocial Expired

ISSUE SUMMARY:

Hello,

I am just about finished customizing my Jomsocial website here: www.sdsuldtalumni.com/index.php/network

However, I am having some lingering and strange problems with user registrations. The only users we managed to get registered, we had to register manually. My users cannot register easily (or else it is a hassle for me) for the following reasons:

Problem 1: The first problem we are having is that no activation link emails are actually being sent to any users that register on our Jomsocial page. After a user registers, a message displays saying to check their email for an activation link (as shown in the image attached below), but none ever arrives. We have had to activate all users manually. I THOUGHT I setup Cron Jobs effectively via my HostGator account (I have an image attached to show you what my settings are) via this tutorial: documentation.jomsocial.com/wiki/Setting_Up_Cron_Job However, I don't think this is causing the problem, since we ARE getting system emails. I'm worried (although I haven't tested this yet) that this will result in the same problem for other emails (like password/username requests and, obviously, resending activation codes).

Expectation 1: I need to get working activation links to be mailed out to our users.

Problem 2: When a user clicks to "Login" to JomSocial, but fails to login for any reason (i.e., they don't enter any login information, or else their username/password is wrong), the system will take them to this login page: www.sdsuldtalumni.com/index.php/component/users/?view=login This login page gives users the opportunity to register if they forgot to make an account via the form to the right (as shown in an image as well). Clicking on "Don't have an account?" will take them to this same form. However, here is the problem. It is NOT the registration form that we actually want them to go to. It takes them to this (really skinny and vertical) registration form, as shown in the attached image, which doesn't really work right (see the differences in how to upload a user icon between these two forms in the attached images -- the one on the skinny registration form does not even work). I want this registration form and the "Don't have an account?" link to connect them to the full registration form: www.sdsuldtalumni.com/index.php/network/register

Expectation 2: I could go either one of two ways with this. Ideally, I would like the registration form on this page www.sdsuldtalumni.com/index.php/component/users/?view=login and that found via the "Don't have an account?" link to connect to this full registration form: www.sdsuldtalumni.com/index.php/network/register And not to that skinny, vertical registration form. Otherwise, here is another option that I'd be happy with: We could just get rid of the registration form completely that appears on the right side of this page www.sdsuldtalumni.com/index.php/component/users/?view=login And instead set the "Don't have an account?" link to link directly to the full registration form www.sdsuldtalumni.com/index.php/network/register

Problem 3: Lastly, this one is just a minor problem, but I would like to setup a ReCAPTCHA system on registration form to prevent spam. I enabled it, but it looks like I have to create an app (and get a key) to make it work, according to the attached image (since no ReCAPTCHA form currently shows, even though it is enabled). Is this right? If so, how do I do this? I also notice an option to integrate Akismet, but I'm not familiar with this. Is this better than ReCAPTCHA? If so, could someone walk me through this instead?

Expectation 3: There should be a ReCAPTCHA section (or Akismet?) on registration forms to prevent spam.

That is all! Everything else on my website seems to be working great, I'm happy to say. :-) It is just these registration issues that are bugging us. Thank you so much to anyone who can help!

Hi, Krisha.

1. Try to use other email for your instance than gmail - the bes would be a email in sdsuldtalumni.com domain. Some emails have defined SPF records that doesn't allow to send from them when sending server has different domain. This apply to Gmail. Just use another email here Backend -> System -> Global Configuration -> Server -> Mail Settings

2. You can solve this by enabling and configuring JomSocial redirect plugin. a) it will override any URLs to Joomla! default registration form b) allows you to select where user will be redirected when login fails or ends with success.

3. Yes, you need to go here: www.google.com/recaptcha/admin file the form, get keys, paste them correctly in configuration fields (as on your printscreen) and that's it. But it may not work on your site as JomSocial 3.2.1.6 uses reCaptch while new keys are for NOCAPTCHA...

You use OUTDATED JomSocial vesrion 3.2.1.6. Current one is 4.0.2. it;s recommended to upgrade.

- Instead of saying: 'it's not working', explain the problem in detail.
- Screenshots with the URL visible in them and the problem marked are more than welcome.
- Tell us how to replicate the problem, we can't fix it if we can't find it.
- Make sure that your site/server meets JomSocial System Requirements
- Make sure to setup JomSocial Cron Job
- Always provide us with access details to the backend and ftp. We need it to debug problems.
- If you have a similar problem, but a solution you found isn't working, open a new thread instead of 'merging' with an existing one.

- Use the "Thank You" feature on any post that helped you
