Variables in profile

Because I have a bilingual site, I'm trying to use variables as options in a Type Checkbox field and for some reason, it's not working.
The translations from the en-GB.com_community.ini are displayed fine in the frontend on the Edit Profile page, but on the About Me page, the variables themselves are displayed and they link to this for example
schulfrei-community.de/en/schulfrei-comm...GERMAN&type=checkbox

How can I get the German and English translations to display on the About Me page, please?
