I would like to prevent my users to put a space or any special character in their username during registration.
I want allow only letters and numbers. Is it possible?

jomsocial running under joomla. and for registration (step1) jomsocial using joomla standard for user registration.
and for your demand, you must using joomla 3rd party extensions. you can search it at:
extensions.joomla.org

joomla allowed whitespace at user name for compatibility concern.

but there are many plugins for that, example:
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/extensi...ation-validation-pro

but I cant guarantee about compatibility things.
