How to add items to the JomSocial toolbar

I see items added to the JomSocial toolbar on this site and have found some information on how it is supposed to be possible, yet can't figure it out on my site. The documentation seems to suggest it will be listed on the menu section of the backend yet I don't have it there?

You removed or renamed type of JomSocial toolbar menu. Jomsocial toolbar menu should have type "jomsocial" (you have Social Menu
(Menu type mnu-user) - it's probably renamed JomSocial toolbar menu). Also, don't remove items from JomSocial toolbar as it may cause URL/redirection issues.

This is default JomSocial toolbar structure:

Profile
|— Change Profile Picture
|— Change Profile Video
|— Edit Profile
|— Edit Details
|— Privacy
|— Preferences
|— Customize My Page
Friends
|— Show All
|— Search
|— Advanced Search
|— Invite Friends
|— Request Sent
|— Pending my approval
Groups

Events

JomSocial toolbar menu is used for INTERNAL communication in JomSocial. You may add additional item s to id just like to any other Joomla! menu.

- Instead of saying: 'it's not working', explain the problem in detail.
- Screenshots with the URL visible in them and the problem marked are more than welcome.
- Tell us how to replicate the problem, we can't fix it if we can't find it.
- Make sure that your site/server meets JomSocial System Requirements
- Make sure to setup JomSocial Cron Job
- Always provide us with access details to the backend and ftp. We need it to debug problems.
- If you have a similar problem, but a solution you found isn't working, open a new thread instead of 'merging' with an existing one.

I didn't remove or rename anything! I already had the Social Menu in place from the system I was using before installing JomSocial. It is not a renamed JomSocial toolbar menu!
From the start there was not a JomSocial toolbar menu listed in the Menu section of the back end and I can't find it anywhere on my installation (if I go into Module manager and set it to type Menu, there is no JomSocial bar?)
Also from the start the toolbar that is there now has always looked like it does now, it never had anything else on it?
