How do I modify the cover photo area on user profiles?

My goal is to change the cover photo area in exchange for a customised interactive application.
My application will be roughly the same size as the current cover photo area, and will completely replace cover photos, and will have its own set of SQL tables that link to existing photos. It is similar to cover photos, but functions in a unique way.

My assumption is that I have a couple options, to either:

  • Make a custom override template for com_community/profile.index.php
  • create a plugin to override the cover photos

I'm not sure which path to choose, or the logistics behind either. I did notice a function within profile.index.php as such:
<!-- begin: .cFocus -->
<?php $this->view('profile')->modProfileUserinfo(); ?>
<!-- end: .cFocus -->
Perhaps I need to override the modProfileUserinfo() function call somewhere? I'm not sure where to go next. Your assistance is appreciated.

Hi, Enrico.

You need to edit ROOT/components/com_community/templates/default/modules/profile/userinfo.php

- Instead of saying: 'it's not working', explain the problem in detail.
- Screenshots with the URL visible in them and the problem marked are more than welcome.
- Tell us how to replicate the problem, we can't fix it if we can't find it.
- Make sure that your site/server meets JomSocial System Requirements
- Make sure to setup JomSocial Cron Job
- Always provide us with access details to the backend and ftp. We need it to debug problems.
- If you have a similar problem, but a solution you found isn't working, open a new thread instead of 'merging' with an existing one.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I am attempting to create an override template for the file you've specified. My override is located under:

ROOT/templates/jersey/html/com_community/modules/profile/userinfo.php

I changed line 17 to output "Hello World" instead of the user's cover photo, but the override isn't taking effect. Should the override template be in ROOT/components/com_community/templates/jersey/ ? I was following the official instructions , but am confused about the sentence:

The very important thing to understand is that Joomla Template Override can only override the current component or module output
What this means, is that if you select the default template in JomSocial Template Settings the override will override the default template.

It doesn't specify whether the override template needs to be located in an adjacent folder.

Hi, Enrico.

Unfortunately this file can't be overrided like that. All files in com_community/templates/default can be except those that are located in folder "modules".

I see. Does that mean I should be wary of JomSocial updates overwriting my changes to that module, since I'm editing it directly? If so, I'll keep a backup of my changes and would have to manually update the module anytime after updating JomSocial.

Hi, Enrico.

Yes, that is correct. In cases like this I keep modified file in same folder just add to extension -mod so it looks like some_file-name.php-mod
But If you remove extension it will remove also modified file. So a safe copy on local will be a good idea too ;)
