Ah, now all is well. thanks so much - I'm marking this as solved.

I did look in the back end, I was looking for "public" or "guest" access on modules and menus - perhaps I was looking in the wrong place - what setting did you change to get the activity stream off of the home page?

Now I have to figure out how to try to get the "add-on" community_message module & plug-ins working again. This is a JomSocial addon that is developed by Gotour Websolutions in Italy. It adds file attachment capability to Jomsocial messages. Bot the component and plugin are installed, but after the upgrade the component is no longer listed in the components in the back end. So now I'm off to "Italy" for technical support.

Hi Jim,

just go to jomsocial backed > configuration > layout > and change Show Activity Stream value into "members only" :)
