We desperately need a function in which a registered user can search for other users, groups, events and pages based on location. For example, i am interested in finding friends that are interested in Gaming within 50 miles of Denver, CO. Interwsts, such as Gaming, would be a required part of registering, creating events or creating pages so it could be searched.

Is this doable with jomsocial?

In Jomsocial you can do the advanced search via location using Radius search option.
Enable and configure it from configuration > site > advanced search > radius search > prntscr.com/i0ivs9
Please note this option will work only for the member's search.
