Hello, Is it possible to use JomSocial as a photo sharing platform with basic functionality similar to 500px or Flickr (photo upload by the registered users using frontend panel limited depends on user status; comments to photos by the registered users; ratings of photos by the registered users; following of chosen users by the registered users; sorting presented photo - for example as new, popular, best rated in the last 24h; photo search engine to serach photos by the author, category or tags; possibility to sale products based on presented photos - for example photo prints or paid photo downloads) ?

JomSocial is a community builder extension. It allows some features you ask... but really you'll need to customize a lot to make it fully fit your needs. From your description it's clear that you need a kind of sophisticated gallery. Try JoomGallery :)
