How to convert a content-based plugin to a Joomla module for groups output?

Hi, all — here's my problem:

I need to add a plugin to a group, but because JomSocial doesn't offer an "onGroupDisplay" event in its API, I've gotta resort to hacking the group's display code. I'm not wild about the prospect, but at least it'll get the job done for now.

In order to add new content to the lefthand column, I've modified this file:

[root]/com_community/templates/jomsocial/layouts/groups/single.php

I can insert a Joomla module just fine, but I need to insert a JomSocial plugin into this space — and simply calling one or inserting the code or including a PHP file doesn't seem to do the trick — I just get blank output.

Has anyone tried to do this before? Is there an easy or quick way to change a JomSocial plugin into a standard Joomla module?

Thanks!
