Jomsocial? A great disappointment.

JomSocial Active Socialize Active

I bought Jomsocial 4.3 pro, encouraged by its good reviews and its alleged superiority over the Community Builder. I also bought the Socialize template because it is not included in the first purchase. I am deeply disappointed. Here are the reasons:

1. Jomsocial is very expensive considering that you receive upgrades for only 6 months and you need to buy the template separately, which is also expensive and supported for only 6 months.
2. The documentation on Jomsocial, all in English, is scarcely updated to version 4 and refers mainly to earlier versions.
3. tutorials on Jomsocial's YouTube channel are very old and out[/right]dated, the latest one goes back 3 years ago and refers to version 3.2, not to mention the others!
4. The Jomsocial Italian community does not exist anymore. Although this is not your responsibility, however, no Italian translation of the component is available, with my great difficulty.
5. Not long after six months from the purchase and I still can not get the component running.

If I chose CB I would not have all these problems. I am deeply disappointed, because Jomsocial does not deserve the money I pay for.

HI, Carlo.

I'm sorry to hear that you're disappointed, but please, let me answer you in details.

1. Why things cost what do they cost? Certainly we all like freebies or products that cost $1. But most of users can't see how much effort was needed to develop and maintain such complex extension. Actually you don't pay only for upgrades (and support) - you pay for extension that you may use on unlimited number of domains. And you may continue to use it even after your subscription expired. And no, you don't NEED actually to purchase template - it's not obligatory as JomSocial works with any Joomla! template.

2. Nowadays English is lingua franca, it's commonly used in Internet. How can you expect that documentation will be in your native language? Imagine that other users expect the same... in how many languages we'll have to prepare the documentation? Documentation refers to universal features and even if some images are outdated - documentation is valid (until noted that it doesn't).

3. Yes, they are old as they ware released some time ago. As you can see they are not linked on our site because of that. JomSocial is developing fast and maintain tutorial videos was quite hard and require a lot of time that could be used for support or developing. Thus we leave that project... and videos left as a courtesy.

4. All translations are contributed by community, thus we can't guarantee it correctness or completeness... but for luck, Italian translation IS available :) www.jomsocial.com/translations/translations/it

5. Did you reported that you have issues? What means "can not get the component running' you installed it and didn't work? I can't answer to this as I see that you just posted 1 post on our support forum.

- Instead of saying: 'it's not working', explain the problem in detail.
- Screenshots with the URL visible in them and the problem marked are more than welcome.
- Tell us how to replicate the problem, we can't fix it if we can't find it.
- Make sure that your site/server meets JomSocial System Requirements
- Make sure to setup JomSocial Cron Job
- Always provide us with access details to the backend and ftp. We need it to debug problems.
- If you have a similar problem, but a solution you found isn't working, open a new thread instead of 'merging' with an existing one.

- Use the "Thank You" feature on any post that helped you
