We currently have a the following:

Joomla v. 2.5.6 & JomSocial 2.6.2

We are looking to upgrade both systems their newest versions. We are also open to performing a fresh install of both and performing a data migration from the older system.

I would GREATLY appreciate any suggestions or reference links anyone can share that would help us with this transition.

That is very old version, really tricky if you want upgrade to the latest version by yourself. I suggest you hire 3rd party developer, maybe you need post a jobs on freelancer.com or upwork.com

We have developers on our team. I also recognize that it is not the simplest of tasks. I am just wondering if there is any documentation or guidance on this subject that might be helpful. Some kind of a road map our team can follow in order to accomplish this task. Thank you!
