I am creating a photo sharing service like instagram where users can share their photos and be liked, commented and shared.
At the moment Jomsocial can do all that, however I am not sure if JomSocial handles FOLLOW/FOLLOWING relationship like instagram in addition to its friendship type of relationship.
Secondly can the friendship relationship system be switched off?

Thank you for contacting us, we really appreciate it you consider Jomsocial.

I am sorry, we dont have feature to following another user, we only have friendship feature.. Currently the friendship feature cant be removed by default, but you can remove it by hacking the core code, with hack jobs you also can achive the following feature.

But, the hack jobs is beyond our support, you need hire the 3rd party developer for it.
