I am looking at updating my JomSocial but need to check that you will be able to view the videos on an iphone once they have been uploaded (and converted into a .flv file)?

Also, are you able to upload videos directly from mobile phones - for example, 1 minute video recorded on your iphone - directly onto the community?

Actually we are not using .flv anymore, we converted all videos to .mp4 right now, so ios can play it.

Yes this is possible, but this is depend your ios compablity / ram memory because on some cases it will be failed during the uploading, the ios cant handle the safari and recorded video together because the ram overload. I suggest you record the video first and upload that recorded video.

Can I just check - if I purchase the latest version of JomSocial does this have the MP4 conversion (and does this still use the FFMPEG to do this via a Cron)? At present the version I have just converts to .flv

Yes, still via cron job

I am sure you are using old Jomsocial, I suggest you purchase again the new version and upgrade your jomsocial and your new video can converted to mp4 then
