I have used earlier versions of Jom Social going back a few years. We needed to build a site that was basically approved members only.

I achieved it with Jom Social 2.2x creating 1 group and then hacking the core to hide time lines, images, videos, profiles etc from the general public and from new 'pending' registrations.

I am wondering if the current version of Jom Social will also require a lot of core hacking to achieve a 'private group only' type of website or if privacy options have been enhanced to allow this type of site now?

The newest version is more flexible than the old one. Your requirment can be done on our latest version easily. Even, if you wanna hack some "private" things, it wont be hard like on the old version.. and we will help you for this :)

Oh ya, on the newest version we changed the name of "private" group, to be "closed / invitation only" group.

Can you advise if a "closed / invitation only" group allows a visitor to apply on-line for registration to the group - i.e. pre-register pending approval by moderator?

Yes this is possible, also you can integrated with 3rd party auto join group for any new user.
