You didn't explained what project and what changes you want to made :)
So please, explain and I'll tell if this could be done.

the purpose of the community ist to find partners for special interest.
Normally you find "biking, playing tennis" and so on; we want to display the specification, for example:
- biking / mountainbiking / professional (oder beginner etc.)
- making music / violin / intermediate
(This is comparable to the way, a store like ebay is organised, for example: Electronics > TV, Video & Audio > Media Streamers - Sony BDP-S1200)
This allows, to find persons with exact (!) the skills, you need for business oder leisure time.
The most important tool in member profile will be, to define your exact skills or interest by categorie (which are determinded by admin), and to make them searchable in frontend.
1. Visit their profile and view their profile info. You may click on certain value e.g Interests: biking. This will run search query and display all members who has the same interests. Here for example I clicked on gender: female:

But it work the same for any field and value.
2. Second method is to use Advanced search so you may build a very detailed query to narrow down the results:

On ebay products are rather organized in categories that include subcategories. Here we have profiles that have common values in profile info... and those values are searchable.
