We are looking at the extended package of JomSocial with the 1 year support but have a few questions first. I am not a developer so please bare with me.
1. Does jomsocial integrate with our current backend users? Is this an option or would Jomsocial be an absolute seperate admin? Our version of Joomla is 3.4.0.
2. Is our updated version of Joomla compatible with Jomsocial?
3. Can you please suggest the best suited chat extension for Jomsocial? I have looked at the reviews for the link you posted but there isnt enough information to make a decision.
4. Is jomsocial installed as a component under our current panel so everything stays under one roof?

Jomsocial users the Joomla user table so a joomla user is a Jomsocial user. Jomsocial installs as a standard Joomla component and is just a menu item in Joomla admin.

Jomsocial 4 is compatible with Joomla 3.4

The main differences between chat components is locally run on your site or hosted on a 3rd party server. the main to are comet chat (local hosted) and jomchat, 3rd party hosted. they offer similar things so i suppose it's down to what features you want from your chat product. Feel free to go to our community and ask the users, that will give you a 100% hinest opinion on what they think is best
