i stumbled upon your solutions, and they would eventually sort of suit our requirements. however:

• can i rename "friend/friends" to something like "peers" e.g.? what would it take?
• can i "abuse" the photogallery to upload .doc .pdf and other documents, or is there another solution that would enable me to do that?

• does it require joomsocial?
• can i rename "teacher" to say "expert"? what would it take?

Jomsocial
- this is possible, you can change the translation file for achive this
- this is not possible, for photogallery only allow the image file, but if you want upload non-image file you can use file upload from group discussion and group bulletin

Guru
- Not it does, Guru doesnt need Jomsocial, but Guru can be integrated with Jomsocial :)
- this is possible , you can change the translation file for achive this
