I was drawn to JomSocial because of this TOPIC: Single User with multiple profiles - Joomla 2.5/3?

I have a similar need to find an extension or plugin for Joomla that allows 1 user to create several "sub-profiles" that can individually be assigned to unique groups and display unique information.

I'm investigating options for a role play gaming site where a Player (primary user profile) might create several Characters (sub profiles) that need to be linked back to their Player profile. These character (sub) profiles need to be able to uniquely be assigned to different user groups depending on the character's affiliations.

Example: Player 1 has an elf character, Elf 1, who is an Elf (Race Usergroup 1) from a city (City Usergroup 1) and part of a guild (Guild Usergroup 1)
Player 2 also has an elf character, Elf 2, who is an Elf (Race Usergroup 1) from the same city (City Usergroup 1) and part of a different guild (Guild Usergroup 2)
Player 2 also has an dwarf character, Dwarf 1, who is an Dwarf (Race Usergroup 2) from the same city (City Usergroup 1) and part of Elf 1's guild (Guild Usergroup 1)

Is this possible yet?

This isn't something that is not possible as a default install with Jomsocial, There is a 3rd partly component called profile types for Jomsocial www.readybytes.net/ have a look at their offering it may do what you are wanting
