I have been searching for a social network software which I can use to run a members club, giving the members the chance to chat and register for various events. I require a DB, user login, place for them to chat, showcase sponsors and list events preferably with auto registration. Could you customise it so I am the only one who can list events?

Those features which you want is possible with Jomsocial, except the chat. For chat you should install another component like JBolo or CometChat.

I suggest you try Jomsocial directly and purchase it, if Jomsocial doenst fit with your need you can ask the refund.
