JomSocial Expired

Hey,

im about to build a community site where people can share not only articles and pictures but potentially all kinds of file types. i know about the security issues that come with it.

my problem is that most gallery components allow only multimedia (pictures, videos) and are not integrated into the article editor in the frontend.

features needed are:
++ users can upload any type of files to a file gallery on the site which then is accessible by all registered users
++ users can access this file gallery directly from the post editor and embed hosted files directly into their post

i tried to use phoca downloads which brought me the closest to a solution. problem is, that bbEditor doesnt allow this kind of input, just direct uploads from the hard drive of the user.

hope that jomsocial offers this kind of functionality or that there is an extension available that fits that need.

p.s. while writing this post, i see that jomsocial also uses the bbeditor instead of a wysiwyg (like tinyMCE). in the context above it would be nice to know if jomsocial supports any kind of wysiwyg editor? in case there is no such media library extension i might try to tweak phoca downloads a bit and access it via that editor.

thanks in advance,
phil

Hi Phil,

In regards to Jomsocial editors we allow you to use any editor that you have installed in Joomla or you can select our own editor which is very stripped down.
Regarding file storage We have a feature called discussions in groups. How this works is if you enable file sharing in the group settings then you can user the editor of your choice to write the discussion and do anything that the WYSIWYG editor is set to allow, then also upload files that follow the joomla file types settings.

This means that users in the group public / private can participate in the discussion, receive notifications and upload / download file specific to the group.

Please note however that Jomsocial is not a $10,000 document management system :) it has some limitations. I would describe this feature as a very good solution if you want to manage a medium about of files. If you are building a huge site with 100's of documents then this may not be the solution for you.

If you visit our demo site and go to this link demo.jomsocial.com/groups/viewgroup/6-jomsocial-fans.html then select options then scroll down in the settings and select allow members to upload files. When you create the initial discussion and press save then you will see an upload box for that discussion. You may not be able to upload a file as its a demo site and that's restricted but at least you can see it working way it works

I hope this helps
