I know this sounds crazy, on a site that promotes collaboration, but we want to create some closed groups that can see posts from us, be able to comment, but not allow shared profile details or direct communication (chats, email).

Is this possible within the user profiles section?

You can make groups private then unless you are a member nothing can be seen from that group. In regards to all other areas of the site it would need some significant customization
