I am wondering if their is a plug-in that configures the Friends function into the Followers style?

So there will be Followers and Following

That's all I need instead of Friends. Can anyone help? I would be grateful.

Following is basically a "light" version of The friends system which is deeply integrated into the core of Jomsocial and it would need to be added into that. Where i think it would become very involved is the entire site privacy would need to be checked / altered to allow a follower to see some things of the person they are following and not others. At first glance it seems minor but to answer your question i think it would be a very large amount of work to add it in and get it working how you wanted. you could try a developer here and see what they would quote to do it www.jomsocial.com/jomsocial-developers

What I needed is something like Twitter / Instagram. So that if I am following someone I can see their updates in my Feed. All profiles will be public like Twitter.

Does that make things simpler with the Privacy?

I was trying to think of a workaround by changing the text from friends to following but the issue is it then lets you see everything (because you are friends) this also requires the other person to accept the request. So not really what you need. To only allow access to the stream only you would need to re write a huge amount of the privacy built into the site

The only thing that may work is
1. Set user profile privacy to self (only me) in admin
remove the links to add friends, friends invitations etc (there are quite a few)
get someone to create a button that appears on the users cover that when pressed it simply updates the database table to make them a friend.
But this would also let the follower comment and write on the persons wall. It could get messy :)
