I would like to know if the current version of JomSocial be geared towards a community of service professionals, such as doctors, lawyers, etc.

Thanks for your inquiry. Jomsocial has the ability to create private groups that require approval to join. Everything in that group then becomes available only to the members. This lets you have private sections of your community as well as general areas that can only be seen site members. and the final sections that are for public view if you wish
