My web developer suggested JomSocial for our company. I asked if we needed 1. JomSocial or 2. Socialize or 3. both. He said just JomSocial. I purchased but noticed a support comment in the FAQ: That we need Socialize to have memberships:

Hi John,

Jomsocial is the component that provides the social networking aspect to the site. Have a look at this link first demo.jomsocial.com then look at the socialize link it is simply Jomsocial with the socialize site template.

Socialize is a Joomla site template that blends jomsocial and joomla so it looks consistent socialize.jomsocial.com

For site memberships you would need an additional add on www.jomsocial.com/addons/memberships
