I am looking to create a site that will allow users to sign up, fill out a profile page and a profile questionnaire and have the ability for the users to find other users based on similar interests on their questionnaire. Kind of like a matchmaking site or dating site but not that. Pretty much the exact same feature set though. Would jom social work for me? Any plugins, bridges or additional extensions help me achieve this? Explain how Jom social could help me out of the box. Thanks!

Jomsocial has a dating module included, which has some basic search matching,

Gender Field Code
Birthday Field Code
Country Field Code
State Field Code
City Field Code

It would be possible to have a developer customize this for you as it is a simple Joomla module.

You can also setup as many custom fields in profiles as you wish then choose if they will be searchable in the standard seach module.

without any developer modifations could a user be able to find other users based on inventory? Example. I want to trade sports cards. I want to find another user by searching the system for a specific card that soneone else has and it will show me their profile, maybe their entire invetory that they have listed and allow me to connect with them? If that is not available out of the box can you suggest any plugins or modules that would assist in achieving this specific requirement, again without any developer intervention. Thanks so much!!!

From your example i am not aware of anything that would do that without some kind of modifications to Jomsocial, you can search based on profile fields and that will allow you to click on the users profile but showing that users inventory would need customizing or some very specific searching on the internet to find multiple add ons that may be able to slot into each other
