Hi, tony.

Joomla is a framework - JomSocial is an application that works in this framework. Joomla groups are for ACL purposes. JomSocial groups and events serve to build community. The main difference is that you as an Administrator can allow you community members to create groups (private or public) and administrate them - creating discussions, events, they'll have own activity stream.

Yes :) JomSosial is released under GNU GPL2 license and is Open Source. You are allowed to use the extension on more than one domain, however we provide support only for the domain you've registered with us, for the length of your subscription.
For more information please read:

tony wrote: 3. Does the calendar have "recurring" functionality to program an event "every other Sunday" ..."third Saturday of each month" etc...Does the calendar have reminders to the targeted group?
As for now events could be repeated daily, weekly, monthly.
No, we're sorry, there is no reminder built-in but you can use 3rd party extensions to add it.
tony wrote: 4. Does the event function have an "invite" box for new emails to get new member interest.
Yes, if you create an event you can invite your friends.
tony wrote: 5. Can I set up, for ex: Groups/New York/Bookclub,
Groups/Chicago/BookClub, Groups/Miami/DogOwners etc...?
You mean that you want to create nested groups... a subgroups? We're sorry but all groups are on the same level and a sub-group can't be created. But don't worry you can use categorization feature to achieve that. Categories could be assigned to parent category.
tony wrote: 6. Would there be a Group/City/Interest replicator? So if someone asked me to set up their city groups, I can do that instantly?
There is no one-button-copy but group creation is so simple that you can create it with no time.
tony wrote: 7. Is there an auto-responder? Would I still need Aweber?
I'm not sure what you mean by "auto-responder" in this case. You need a mass messaging feature?
Remember, Joomla! is a great framework and with lot of extensions... if you need addition features you can find extensions that will fit your needs in JED (Joomla! Extension Directory).
