I'm wondering how I can edit / remove/ or change this image?
Is it just a matter of going into the theme folder and exchanging it with another image the same size, and renaming it with the correct extension?

you can do it by using template override:
documentation.jomsocial.com/wiki/Customizing_Template

1. copy frontpage.guests.php from /components/com_community/templates/default/ to /templates/protostar/html/com_community/
2. edit that file at line 13 you will find:

$heroImage = JURI::root(true).'/components/com_community/templates/default/images/guest-bg.jpg';

I followed the instructions, and placed my image into the /images folder.

When I use Firebug, I can't seem to find the background url in the right hand side window.
Step 4 in the documentation says to "copy the entire selector for the image"
That contains the background url details.....and I can't find this.

Where do I locate this?
