Profile and Group Avatar behavior?

After uploading either a profile or group avatar, the below files are created in the indicated paths for each avatar uploaded:

Profile Avatar
/images/avatar/{hash}.png
/images/avatar/profile-{hash}.png
/images/avatar/thumb-{hash}.png

Group Avatar
/images/avatar/group/{hash}.png
/images/avatar/group/group-{hash}.png
/images/avatar/groupthumb-{hash}.png

When deleting/removing either a profile or group avatar, not all of the files are removed. The files highlighted in RED above are not deleted. How are they cleaned up? Is this by design and if so, what is the rational for keeping the remaining files on the server?

Also as a side note... Once the avatars are relocated to S3 storage, all files are copied to S3 and removed from the web server for the exception of those files highlighted in RED above...
