ISSUE SUMMARY:
on jomsocial's community page there is a right sidebar w/ whos online and various other hot areas for the site.
I would like to know more about how to replicate this for our site.

Included is a snip'in i took that highlights what i am looking at replicating.

For "Who's online" module you can use module JS Members, and set to show "online" only.
