Hi I have a couple of questions regarding the search and advanced search.
1 - I enabled Advanced search, so I see no need for the standard search. How can I disable it?
2 - In the advanced search the user has the ability to create criteria. How could I only have predefined criteria fields only. So instead of the user having to create criteria he/she just pick from the predefined ones.
Basically I just need the ability to search by location and name.

If not possible out of the box/configuration a suggestion of how to achieve this would be appreciated.

1. No, it can't be disabled completely - but you may hide this option in JomSocial toolbar. Just disable "search" menu item in "Jomsocial toolbar" menu.

2. This is not possible out-of-the-box as criteria are built dynamically using profile fields. This will be rather extensive customization so you'll need professional developer to implement this. We can't suggest how to do that as it may be done in many different ways - your developer will choose right way for your project.

Please, note that this will be a core hack. Core hacks are not recommended nor supported as they may not working with future JomSocial releases and/or cause issues that will be not supported. Users with core files hack refuse to upgrade their installation to keep those hacks and they are stuck with outdated and unsupported versions.

What about simply removing the 'add criteria' part from the template override and having only the static html markup fields/criteria I want them to search for?
