I am in the process of planning a deployment of a JomSocial site in a load balanced configuration. However I have encountered a possible problem with activating the Cron Jobs. As you know, to activate a Cron Job, the system pings it via a URL. However this appears to be a problem on a load balanced system as you never know on which server the load balancer would drop the wget Cron Job request. By the way, the Cron is handling the full range of tasks including Video Conversion.
System configuration:
1 Load Balancer
2+ Web Servers
1 DB Server
I have two questions.
First, is it possible to trigger the Cron directly instead of via URL because of the load balancer? (Or is this even necessary?)
Second, will it be a problem having the Cron triggered multiple times, within the same minute, on different web servers?
1. I am not sure we have not tried it, since the cron job is be called from Joomla URL I think it won't possible, fyi for cron we use this file components/com_community/libraries/cron.php
2. But still the cron will call to the 1 server, even you called it from different server :) do you get it?
I do not think I am understanding what you mean on my second question. Are you saying that if I activate the Cron on web server 1, every time it triggers, it will not go through the load balancer but instead just hit the same server directly from which is was triggered?
Well, I am not server expert..but yes you right, I think it wont go to load balancer, well you can try it since we never tried it before, and you know the result then :)
