How do i add an image to the background of my jomsocial site. instead of just background colour ?
I went to template manager > MY_TEMPLATE > advanced but could not see where i could add and image.

you can do it by using css:
1. put the image file under /templates/protostar/css
2. edit /templates/protostar/css/template.css
3. put this code at the bottom of page:

body.site {
  background: url(imagefile.jpg) no-repeat center center fixed !important; 
  -webkit-background-size: cover;
  -moz-background-size: cover;
  -o-background-size: cover;
  background-size: cover;
}
