For some reason the activation links are not being sent (included in any emails) new users upon registration. Only a username and password are being sent and this is not what is wanted. User Manager -> Options -> Activation = Self is turned on. I am not sure why this is happening.

But activation link is sent. I used this link: ROOT/index.php/fyrSignup/Register and after filling all fields I received:

If you mean that activation link is not sent when register via registration form in module - then this is not issue related with JomSocial as module sends data to com_users and that is Joomla! component not supported by us.

That's other thing.
1. Make sure that admin user has enabled Receive System emails in Users -> User Manager -> certain account
2. Make sure that you entered admin user email to Send Notification Emails to in Components -> JomSocial -> Configuration
