Yes you can, go to profile user,and send message from there,,

OK found the chat thingy when logged in under my personal account- however it is showing 4 on the the envelope icon (perhaps that icon should be changed to save confusion?) and there seems to be no way to clear the number regardless of what I click, also will this feature only work when the user you wish to contact is online? As I cannot find a way to actually send the message.

I have added my personal login details below so as you can see the issue from the front end
*Extplorer installed so FTP may not be required


Update I have answered the second part of the question myself by "chatting" with admin whilst I was logged into back end as admin and logged into front end as myself and now the 4 has changed to a 3.

Thank you for you input we will improve it on next release, need to make it perfect step by step, since chat is new mayor feature.

You can send message from profile user, like on old Jomsocial version, no big different there :)
