Anyone else experienced this problem?

I think this issue caused by jsnmetro template, which the jomsocial link becomes white so it cant be read here..to fix it you can add this css code inside your css file

.jomsocial-wrapper .jomsocial a {
    color: #3149ff !important;
}
.joms-stream__body {
    color: #000 !important;
}

No I am sorry, this is not jsnmetro template, its standard JomSocial.

Could it be related to this bug:

Have the configuration gone bad and started using standard template? Where are these settings stored? Database table or file?

well, if you wanna set the avatar square please you go to Jomsoical backend->Pro Features->General, change "Avatar shape" to square
