I have a chat module installed and im trying to link to the users profile within the chat....the chat module gives a demo setup showing (obviously yourwebsite is not in my link, its replaced w my actual url)

http://yourwebsite/profile.php?user=%USER%

Ive tried that and ...
http://yourwebsite/profile.php?user=%USERNAME%

http://yourwebsite/index.php?option=com_community&view=profile&userid=%USER_ID%

http://yourwebsite/index.php?option=com_community&view=profile&userid=%USERNAME%

My old chat worked with site and a demo chat that i was testing also linked to users profile fine...any ideas?

What chat do you use? Chats like JomChat or JBolo has direct integration with JomSocial.

The best way to check what JomSocial member profile URL look like is to disable SEF in Joomla! and browse to profile ;)
Then you'll have URL canvas for profiles.
